Henry Clay Mock Trial
What is mock trial?
Mock trial is a competitive intramural team where students work together to simulate a trial. Students prepare to play both attorneys and witnesses, in a format that mashes together law, analytical thinking, and theater.
Who are the coaches?
The team is coached by HCHS teacher Paul Brown and practicing attorney Michael Barnett.
When are competitions?
The KHSMTA regional tournament is held in February each year. The top-performing teams from each region will be invited to the state tournament in March. If we emerge victorious at the state tournament, we can represent Kentucky in the National High School Mock Trial Tournament in May.
Additionally, the undergraduate mock trial programs from the University of Kentucky and Western Kentucky University have traditionally held alternative pre-season tournaments for high school teams in which we may compete, dependent on student interest.
What’s the time commitment?
We will set our practice schedule pending discussions with interested students but are aiming for two hours a week of practice after school. We may arrange a weekend scrimmage against another school in the region. The regional tournament lasts two or three days over a weekend in February which is yet to be determined by the KHSMTA. Students should anticipate being present for that entire weekend.
How do I learn more?
Henry Clay Mock Trial will have an informational meeting on Monday, August 28th at 3:30 PM in Room 41. Students and their parents are invited to learn more about the nascent team and what mock trial entails. Any questions can be emailed to coach@henryclaymocktrial.com. The Kentucky High School Mock Trial Association also maintains an excellent FAQ at http://www.kymocktrial.com/faqs.
